Southern Cancer Center’s “Bread Bite” series shares weekly words of encouragement and inspiration from local area churches. This week’s message is from Pastor Daniel Blaylock of Forest Hill Church of God in Mobile.

Pastor Daniel- Today’s verse is found in James 1:5. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

If we’re honest, we all face situations we’re not quite sure how to handle. Sometimes we feel like we’re in a “no-win” situation. At times, we face a decision where there are just no good options. This verse is a gentle reminder that God has promised to help us on days like this! In the Old Testament, one of the prophets prayed these words, “Lord, we do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”

The verse says that when we’re facing a difficult decision, God will do two things if we ask for His help:

  1. He will “give liberally” – He really WILL help us. He may reveal facts we were previously unaware of. He may send solid advice through the words of a trusted friend. A way forward may just “come to us” as if out of nowhere. But God will help us know what course of action will most please Him.
  2. He will give “without reproach” – He does not belittle us or condemn us for being so needy or unwise that we required His help. God is actually VERY PLEASED when we love Him enough to seek His input on the major decisions of our lives. Remember, “God resists the proud, but He GIVES GRACE to the humble” – so we want to be on that list!

If you’re struggling today with a tough choice, earnestly call out to God in prayer about the decision. Seek out advice from people who love God and share your values, for God often speaks through His people. Be willing to wait for the picture to become clearer before making a decision if you can; it’s often easier once more facts surface and come to light. Hang in there! You’ve got this!
