“My name is Skyler Martin and I’m a nurse practitioner here at Southern Cancer Center and I’ve been here since 2013.
I’m married to Cole Martin. We got married in 2019 in Orange Beach, Alabama. I’m an outdoors person. I enjoy running and have run a full marathon. The majority of our patients don’t believe that I’ve run a marathon and when I tell them that they asked me who was chasing me. We spend most of our time out on the intracoastal waterway and out in the Gulf. I like to be out on the boat and on the water, and I enjoy getting the most out of my weekends in my Saturday.
My favorite place to travel is Key West, Florida. And I think anybody that knows me knows that. It’s just such a cool place. Key West has so many different things to offer and I’m a people watcher, so it’s an ideal place for that. When a patient comes in for chemo, I always tell them check in at the front desk and we point you everywhere you need to go from there. They go throughout our lab, they meet with the physician or the nurse practitioner to talk about any side effects they may be having, and then they go back to the chemo area to get their treatment. It’s super laid back while they’re here because our goal is for everybody to be as comfortable throughout the entire process as they can be.
We have several different support options for patients throughout the clinic, but one of my favorites is the wig selection that we have. Patients can come in and try different hairstyles, different colors. We have several different things for them to choose from and it’s actually fun watching some of the patients try out things they never thought that they would do before.
The advice that I give patients when they start treatment is to just keep your head up and know that we’re here for you no matter what throughout the entire process. I always encourage patients to call us no matter how small they think the question is and no matter how much they think they’re bothering us. That’s what we’re here for. The people that we’re privileged to care for are incredible people and they mean so much to me throughout their journey.”
