Bread Bite: Let the Peace of Christ Rule

Continuing our weekly series of encouraging words, here is your Southern Cancer Center Friday “Bread Bite”, this week from Pastor Daniel Blaylock from Forest Hill Church of God in Mobile, Alabama.

Pastor Daniel-
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15)

The word translated “rule” in this verse means “to be an umpire; to decide, to control, to determine”. Don’t you love that! There are times in life we face tough decisions and it’s not always clear which path we should take. In moments like that, Paul urges us to let God’s peace be our umpire. What does an umpire do? He enforces the rules of the game and decides if a player was “in bounds” or “out of bounds”. That’s what the peace of Christ will do when we face tough decisions.

In other words, whenever we’re in doubt, we should follow the peace of God. Would taking this course of action violate your conscience? Then don’t do it! (Martin Luther said, “it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience”.) Does a decision seem rational, but after praying about it you can’t shake this uneasy sense that something’s just not quite right? Then hold off! Don’t jump into a major decision without having the peace of God about it. On the other hand, do you need to have a difficult conversation with someone? Despite the difficulty, do you know in your heart that it’s the right thing to do? Then “let the peace of Christ rule”.
